Stage 4: Landquart – Splügen

It’s getting serious

This day started again with bright sunshine in beautiful Graubünden and we followed the Rhine further up towards Splügen our destination for the day. This will be the first serious uphill stage taking us to 1400m. The uphill is quite famous and called via mala (bad road) a road following a rocky ravine.

The surrounding landscape is simply astonishing and you wonder how someone had the idea to build a road here. The climb itself was rather smooth but long and taking is through 3 short tunnels – the first ones on our trip. After 2 stops where we enjoyed the great weather and scenery we arrived in Splügen.

We arrived at the camp ground where we were lucky enough to book the only room available so we didn’t need to stay outside in our tent. Since at 1400m it became quite cold at night.

The campground owner was even so nice to turn on the heater before we arrived. The room is definitely to remember and actually another really cool thing while bike packing: You never know exactly what to expect in the evening when you get on your bike in the morning. And throughout our trip we actually realised the coolest and most astonishing places were the ones we did not expect something special at all.

For dinner we had Pizza (again)
