17: Siena – Pienza

Happy and and motivated with a fixed a bike and some recovery we got on our bikes and, before we would leave Siena we made a stop a at post office to ship some of our clothes home which we would definitely not need on our tur anymore, like long sleeve jerseys and other stuff for cold temperatures.

1.6kg lighter we then finally left Siena and made our way again through beautiful Tuscany and kept on to follow the Euroveelo 5 route and so actually the via Francigena.

In one town where we had a look on the map a guy in car stopped next us to and recommende to go on a route parallel to ours. On the hill line. Accrodding to him super beautiful. However since I did not have the route on GPS neither was it following the official markings we decided to stick to our plan.

We probably should have followed his advice, because our route took us to some backroads some on Gravel with uphills, which was exhausting and we did not make a lot of progress.

In the second part of stage we took a wrong turn, which made us go a long uphill through Wineyards, beautfiul again, but since we did not really want to be here the mood could have been better. But as so many times during this trip we were actually rewarded in many ways. For a short break we stopped near the road, and realized this was the place where everyone stops to take pictures of the Mohn flowers and green meadows of Tuscany.

Unfortunately I reacted allergic to some of the grasses there so we did not stay for long

So we continued and stopped in San Quirico a nice little town at the edge of the Orcia Valley after a lot of arguing where to stop for some food and drink (many places were already closed during the early afternoon) Anouk took over the decision and we just hung out out a playground just outside the citiy walls and consumed the drinks we still had with us.

There we also locked down the stay for the night, this time an agriturismo, meaning camping at a farm. Which was also a great choice in the end, not too far off the route and it was located near Pienza a small town which is actually also declared as world heritage, so really nice, but also a lot of Tourists there. We stopped for an ice cream had a quick look and then after getting some groceries moved on to the farm.

But first to get there w had to follow another gravel roa for some kms. (I hate gravel) Telling Anja any house in sight that this must be it just to pass it also did not add up to the mood either, but once we arrived where we wanted to be everythign was forgotten. Nice camp ground, few people and an astnishing view over the Val d’Orcia.
