Bikepacking in Thailand

When we were in Thailand beginning 2022 we met a guy from Great Britain who stayed in our hotel. The cool thing about him was that he brought his bike all the way from England to ChiangMai to do some bike trips in this beautiful landscape. This caught our mind and after doing some trips around the city and into the mountains we soon realized that the road conditions are great and after seeing a bunch of other cyclists it soon the the thought came up, why are we not doing this? The thought came back a while after we got home from our Sicily trip, and became more and more a topic when we did the planning for our next vacation.

After quite some discussions and thinking and more discussions whether this is actually possible: taking two bikes with us, the trailer and Anouk of course it was quite a process until we finally decided to really do it.

The planning of the trip took long, starting to figure out how take the bike with us: each airline has different regulations (taking the bike is in general not a problem) but how it can be added to the booking and how much in the end it will be we probably will only know for sure once we are back… Lufthansa for example charges different for a bike than for a box…

The Stages

The Route:

Setting the route also turned out difficult. Since again we would go in 70km stages however Thailand is much less dense populated than Central Europe, finding towns with hotels always in the required distance gave me quite some headaches leading into rerouting several times.

The Route is now 12 – 13 stages taking us through the north of Thailand, in total ~850kms with.

Note: The shown map in the picture includes options for some stages.
